Business and IT Professionals View BI Differently

Domo

I’ve had a boatload of conversations with customers and prospects about their needs for a business intelligence solution. While every company’s needs are unique, there’s a common theme in each conversation: business users and IT professionals view BI differently. Both views are important, but they have very different expectations. This is one of the reasons I started Domo.

See the Future! Psychics vs. Accurate Business Forecasting and Trend Analysis. Do you have a psychic on your staff? I didn’t think so. Most of us would find it hard to justify that kind of resource to our management team. Still, the idea is intriguing. Wouldn’t it be great to identify trends and patterns and respond appropriately? You could be there before your competition, and probably get a promotion in the process.

The Other Cost of Sales

Domo

Being a top salesperson isn’t cheap. I like that. If you’ve followed my startup rules, you might remember this one ( JJSR 8 ) — Find salespeople who love to spend money: watches, cars, houses. The more they spend, the better your prospects. But you have to set them up for success, too. That means making sure they’re spending most of their time actually selling and not filing reports or digging for data, which as you can see from the Domo infographic below, is a more common pr

Infographic: What Would You Do With An Extra 2 Hours?

Domo

I’m a big believer in Friday nights and weekends being sacred time for family and fun ( see #JJSR 35 ). Especially during the startup phase, work like a dog during the week, but make sure to carve out time for what matters most. Unfortunately, that model breaks down if too much of the work week is spent doing lame stuff…like looking for information or waiting for reports.

Introducing CEO.com

Domo

CEO.com is a website I launched before starting Domo. When I was CEO of Omniture, I was constantly looking for stories and inspiration that would help me be a better leader. I wanted to create a resource to help myself and other executives stay up-to-date with what’s happening at the leadership level across top industries and have the latest strategies and best practices in business management all in one place.

Going Out of My Comfort Zone

Domo

I’m a software developer. Being social on the internet has meant furthering my career. I’ve had technology blogs, used Twitter, and talked in forums and newsgroups. None of those interactions were on a personal level. It’s always been about technology or troubleshooting a coding problem I had been having. The #domosocial experiment was jolting and a bit frightening to me.

In our first look, I’m happy to report that we’re gaining traction. One of our group goals was to double our collective followers and friends across Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and LinkedIn.

The New School of Dashboards

Domo

I like old school. Sometimes. Cars, clothes, shoes, art…they can all be cool with a throwback style. But business intelligence, and dashboards in particular, is a different story. Cobbling together a few disconnected charts, throwing in a couple of stoplights and waiting for it all to refresh once a day used to qualify as a dashboard. Now, things are different.

It’s About the Experience

Domo

When Domo announced the #domosocial experiment, I was a little surprised. I thought to myself, “Doesn’t everyone already use Facebook and Twitter?” Why do we need to encourage more of that? Then I realized that perhaps this isn’t just about using more products — perhaps this is about something bigger. For thousands of years people have done their best to live in a world where things are done inefficiently.

Confessions of a Social Network Neophyte

Domo

When Josh started to roll out the details of the #domosocial experiment, I got the distinct feeling of trepidation. I’ve been fairly quiet in the social networking space, and this experiment would require consistent and active participation on my part. This could seriously jeopardize my goal of never appearing on the first page of a Google Search of my name, or perhaps posting something that I would not like the rest of the world to see.

The Social World Isn’t Your Stage

I’m a performer at heart and don’t mind being the center of attention. So when Josh James announced the #domosocial experiment, I immediately started to think of how I was going to attract some attention in the social sphere. Having studied social media in college, I’m fully aware of the positive mojo it can bring to a company. However, I was trained from the perspective of a company — not as an individual.

For about a month in 1987, when I was in 5th grade, foursquare took over as the game of choice at Draper Elementary. While football was still king for the 30-minute lunch recess, foursquare dominated the shorter 15-minute morning and afternoon recess time slots. I often found myself in the square tangling with some of the best athletes the school had to offer.

Initial Employee Feedback — In Pictures

Domo

To capture some baseline metrics and preliminary feedback on the #domosocial experiment, we asked employees to take an online survey. Suffice it to say, I’m glad to see that learning something new is by far the number one thing people said they are excited about. This supports the buzz we’ve been hearing in the hallways and seeing on Twitter. When it comes to what worries people, the time commitment and a fear of doing something stupid were reported as the two most common concerns.

Are You Focused on the Rule or the Exception? Hint: Throw Away the Rule Book. In business, it is the exception that will cause us to lose revenue, competitive advantage and market share. Not to sound too melodramatic but if you had a way to identify the exception before or as it was happening and handle the situation before it becomes cri

Why BI is Broken and 3 Ways to Fix It

One of my biggest frustrations as CEO of a public company — and one of the principle reasons I started Domo — was how hard it was (ok, impossible) to get all the data I needed when I needed it. In fact, it was usually easier to know what was going on outside the company than it was to really know what was happening on the inside.
