I loved this recent post on The Data Doghouse , which underscores why “spreadsheets from hell” are still the most pervasive BI tool for business users. Last year’s TDWI study on Visual Reporting agrees. That survey found that nearly two-thirds of BI users are still staring at tables of numbers and text as their predominant form of analysis.

Don’t Fall Victim to the Top 5 Reasons Businesses Fail! BI is the Cure! I write blogs (in case you haven’t noticed) and blog writers LOVE to use numbers. “10 ways to achieve customer satisfaction”, “7 things you should know before buying a computer”. There’s a storm comin’ Well, figuratively anyway. Out here in Utah, it’s been dry as a bone. We even had to cancel our family’s annual holiday break sledding trip (in related news, my back is doing great). The storm is in BI. You’ve probably heard the buzz. Many of the prognosticators are pointing to 2012, not as the year the earth falls off the Mayan calendar and into oblivion, but as the advent of real business user-focused BI.

Before working at Domo, I taught middle and high school. When I first started teaching, I was hounded with advice. “It’s okay to use worksheets.” “Don’t feel bad about assigning the chapter and questions.” “Feel free to copy exactly what I’m doing.” Though these suggestions were appreciated and sounded like an easy way to teach, I realized that if I was going to accomplish anything with my students, I needed a new approach.
